Our Mission
Most websites that cover Chinese mountains fall into two camps: dry encyclopedia entries that tell you a peak exists but nothing about what it feels like to be there, or travel agencies whose every sentence ends with a booking link. We built Chinese Mountains to fill the gap between them — a site that gives you the depth of a field guide with the usability of a modern web app.
We cover 37 mountains and counting, from tourist icons like Huangshan and Zhangjiajie to remote giants like Namcha Barwa and Mount Gongga that most travel sites ignore. Every page includes practical details you actually need: ticket prices, cable car times, altitude sickness warnings, and how to get there by public transport.
Who We Are
The Chinese Mountains team is a small group of hikers, photographers, and writers who have collectively spent years exploring China's mountain regions. We've climbed the 6,666 steps of Mount Tai at 3 AM for sunrise, gripped the chains on Mount Hua's Plank Walk, and sat in silence at Feilai Temple watching Kawagarbo emerge from the clouds.
We're not a travel agency. We don't take commissions on bookings. We make no money from this site — it exists because we believe China's mountains deserve a guide as extraordinary as they are.
How We Research
Every mountain on this site has either been visited by a team member or researched through a combination of:
- •On-the-ground visits with documented trips, photos, and notes
- •Official park websites, UNESCO documentation, and provincial tourism boards
- •Academic sources on Chinese geography, geology, and cultural history
- •Recent traveler reports and reviews to verify current conditions (ticket prices, trail status, construction)
- •Chinese-language primary sources for cultural and historical context not available in English
We update ticket prices, opening hours, and seasonal recommendations at least twice a year. If you spot outdated information, please let us know.
Editorial Standards
Every page on this site follows the same principles:
- •No AI-generated filler. Every paragraph is written by a human who understands the mountain being described.
- •Facts over flattery. We tell you when a mountain is crowded, when the cable car is overpriced, and when the "famous sunrise" is actually just a 5 AM queue in the cold.
- •Practical first. Directions, costs, timing, and safety come before poetic descriptions.
- •No affiliate-driven recommendations. We don't rank mountains based on which one pays higher commissions.
